The main figure in the group is Jacob, son of Isaac. To the left of this figure is his son Joseph, facing towards the sad figure of Rachel - despite Jacob's love for her, she had difficulty conceiving, and would die in childbirth at the birth of her second son Benjamin.
The main figure in the group at right is Leah, the unloved but fertile older sister of Rachel - she was Jacob's first wife, he being married to both sisters. On Leah's left sits her father Laban, who had tricked Jacob into marrying her. The child in front of Leah has a vegetable root in his hands. This is the aphrodisiac Mandrake, which Leah bartered with her sister Rachel in return for a night with Jacob. See Genesis 29-35.
